NORTH Melbourne is on top of the ladder for the first time in more than 17 years after blowing a much-improved Fremantle away in the final quarter to claim a 31-point win.

The Kangas led by just seven points at three-quarter time, courtesy of a late Jarrad Waite goal, but they kicked the first five goals of the last quarter to set up their 20.12 (132) to 14.17 (101) win at Etihad Stadium.

Waite finished with four goals in another fine display up forward, while Jack Ziebell was outstanding with 26 disposals and three goals.

Ziebell's output was more than matched by Nat Fyfe (27 disposals, four goals) and Lachie Neale (36 touches, one goal) enjoyed another prolific day out.

They face the 18th-placed Blues in an intriguing clash at Domain Stadium on Sunday.
