Your club's rap sheet: How every team fared with the MRP in 2016 - AFL.com.au

Your club's rap sheet: How every team fared with the MRP in 2016
          Nathan Schmook  October 8, 2016 8:00 AM
THE FIVE Tribunal cases heard in 2016 was an all-time low for the AFL judiciary as clubs became increasingly reluctant to challenge penalties handed down by the Match Review Panel.
The second season under a revamped system introduced by football operations manager Mark Evans has been seen as a success, with players serving a total of 50 weeks suspension (including the NAB Challenge).
That's down from 57 in 2015 and 75 in 2014, with the rate of suspensions decreasing in each of the past four seasons.
The MRP's new penalty structure, which allows for low-level offences to be punished with fines rather than carryover points or suspension, is largely responsible for the dip in the past two seasons.
So how did your club fare in 2016, and what were the big headlines? We look back on each club's season to wrap up the memorable cases, how many weeks your players spent sidelined, and how much your players were left out of pocket.

How Saints, Kangaroos, Bulldogs, Victory and Renegades are affected by the AFL buying Etihad Stadium | Herald Sun

How Saints, Kangaroos, Bulldogs, Victory and Renegades are affected by the AFL buying Etihad Stadium

THE AFL has officially purchased Etihad Stadium in a deal set to provide a significant financial boost to its tenants.
While powerhouse clubs Essendon and Carlton have solid deals with the venue, the current agreement places a severe financial burden on tenants St Kilda, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs
A-League club Melbourne Victory and BBL team Melbourne Renegades are two other franchises to have agreements with Etihad Stadium and would be watching the ownership agreement closely.

Travis Cloke to take massive pay cut in move to Bulldogs - AFL.com.au

Travis Cloke to take massive pay cut in move to Bulldogs

Nathan Schmook October 3, 2016 9:17 AM
TRAVIS Cloke is willing to more than halve his pay packet to join 2016 premiers the Western Bulldogs.

Cloke has a lucrative one-year deal left with Collingwood, but the key forward is willing to forgo that to make a fresh start with the Bulldogs, according to his management company.

The departure of Cloke is likely to help the Magpies secure Greater Western Sydney youngster Will Hoskin-Elliott, who is expected to seek a trade back to his home state.

Paul Connors, who heads up Cloke's management company, said discussions to get the 29-year-old to the Bulldogs would progress once to Dogs' premiership celebrations had subsided.

"Travis is going there, if he can, for very minimal money," Connors told NAB AFL Trade Radio.

Boomer won't be at Collingwood: Buckley

Lee Gaskin October 1, 2016 11:56 AM

NORTH Melbourne great Brent Harvey won't be continuing his record-breaking career at Collingwood next year.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley told Channel 7 on Saturday morning that his club hadn't approached the 38-year-old.

"What I will say about Boomer is he won't be at Collingwood next year," Buckley said.

"I can clarify that out of respect for him.

"He doesn't need that speculation.

"Whether it's there from his management to pump up his value somewhere else, or it's there because it's an interesting link to make, everyone seems to be linked to Collingwood.

"But he won't be there next year."

The Magpies loom as major players when trade week gets underway, having been linked to a host of experienced players.

North Melbourne's Daniel Wells and Nick Dal Santo, Fremantle's Chris Mayne and Greater Western Sydney's Will Hoskin-Elliott are among those who could be heading to Collingwood.

"A couple of those guys we're very interested in and a couple of those guys we're not," Buckley said.

"I can't clarify that right now.

"Wait for trade week, this is Grand Final day."

Match report: Dogs dust Swans to snap 62-year drought

Match report: Dogs dust Swans to snap 62-year drought

Nick Bowen October 1, 2016 5:51 PM

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have broken the AFL's longest existing premiership drought and completed the most unlikely finals run of all time to win their second Grand Final with a 22-point win over the Sydney Swans. The Bulldogs kicked the final three goals of the game to triumph 13.11 (89) to 10.7 (67), a win that broke the club's 62-year premiership drought and ensured coach Luke Beveridge and his side will join Charlie Sutton's 1954 team in Bulldogs immortality.
The Bulldogs took an eight-point lead into the final term at the MCG on Saturday after grabbing ascendancy of the game with a 2.6 to 1.2 third quarter, but struggled to put the Swans away in the final term.
As it happened: Dogs win famous flag
Twice John Longmire's men closed to within one point in a thrilling final quarter, first through a Lance Franklin set shot from 50m at the seven-minute mark and, after an answering Jake Stringer goal, a George Hewett set shot from 45m five minutes later.

David Sygall September 24, 2016 8:00 PM

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have advanced to a Grand Final showdown against the Sydney Swans after a pulsating six-point victory over Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night.
The epic preliminary final was filled with plenty of niggle and Bulldogs held on to edge the Giants 13.11 (89) to 12.11 (83). Bulldog Jack Macrae kicked a clutch goal with less than three minutes to go to give the visitors the lead after scores were locked.
Full match coverage and stats
Giants co-captain Callan Ward was heavily concussed in the second term and was the main injury concern for the home side, while the Dogs had to do it tough without Jordan Roughead after copping a ball to his face which left him with bleeding in his right eye.

Match report: Swans trounce Cats to storm into Grand Final

Match report: Swans trounce Cats to storm into Grand Final

Nathan Schmook September 23, 2016 11:21 PM
THE SYDNEY Swans have stormed through to their third Grand Final in five years with a fearsome 37-point win over a shell-shocked Geelong at the MCG on Friday night.
In a pressure-football master-class that defied what has been a bruising September, the Swans dismissed their opponents in a brutal first half and were never seriously challenged, winning 15.7 (97) to 8.12 (60).
The win keeps the prospect of an historic all-Sydney Grand Final alive, with Greater Western Sydney and the Western Bulldogs to face off on Saturday for the right to meet the red-hot Swans.
Five things we learned: Geelong v Sydney Swans
Defender Aliir Aliir will face a race against time to play in the premiership decider after suffering a right knee injury late in the first quarter and being put on ice for the rest of the match after a fitness test.
Midfielder Luke Parker also suffered a left knee injury in the second quarter, but played on and was influential in what was an emphatic statement from the minor premiers in front of 71,772 fans.

Match report: Prelim comes at a cost for battered Swans

Michael Whiting September 17, 2016 10:16 PM

THE SYDNEY Swans have advanced to a preliminary final, but could be without Jarrad McVeigh and Gary Rohan after both were injured in Saturday night's six-goal win over Adelaide at the SCG.

McVeigh (calf) and Rohan (knee) were first-half casualties in the 18.10 (118) to 12.10 (82) victory that sets the Swans a Friday night date with Geelong at the MCG.
Full match coverage and stats
The Swans' injuries come just seven days after losing ruckman Kurt Tippett (jaw) and NAB AFL Rising Star winner Callum Mills (hamstring), setting them a huge task to qualify for the Grand Final.
McVeigh limped off in the second term, and despite reappearing with the left calf strapped for a five-minute burst to start the third, was done for the night.

Nathan Schmook September 16, 2016 10:24 PM
THE WESTERN Bulldogs have ended Hawthorn's triple-premiership reign and advanced to their first preliminary final since 2010, standing up at the MCG to win a dramatic semi-final by 23 points on Friday night.
In a stunning performance that continues a fairytale September, the Bulldogs outmuscled and outran their more experienced opponents and won through to face Greater Western Sydney, winning 16.11 (107) to 12.12 (84).
They landed a series of body-blows in a six-goal run in the third quarter before Tory Dickson landed the knockout punch in the opening minute of the final term, opening up a 32-point lead and sending the Hawks out of the finals in straight sets.
Five things we learned: Second semi-final, Hawks v Bulldogs
Hawthorn kicked four of the last five goals of the match, but it was too little too late as the Bulldogs soaked up a famous finals win in front of 87,823 fans.

Lee Gaskin September 10, 2016 10:18 PM

Match report: Giants stun Swans to seal prelim spot

Michael Whiting September 10, 2016 5:53 PM

GREATER Western Sydney will host a preliminary final after running away from the Sydney Swans to win by 36 points in a brutal qualifying final at ANZ Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After taking a two-point lead to half-time, the Giants got some breathing space in the third term courtesy of a three-goal burst in five minutes from star forward Jeremy Cameron.
In front of 60,222 they stormed away in the final term to win 12.19 (91) to 7.13 (55).
Five things we learned: Swans v Giants
The Giants will now have a week off before hosting a preliminary final against Hawthorn or the Western Bulldogs, while the Swans will lick their wounds and play a sudden-death semi final at the SCG next weekend against either Adelaide or North Melbourne

Match report: Cats down Hawks in a final thriller

Match report: Cats down Hawks in a final thriller

Nick Bowen September 9, 2016 10:25 PM

GEELONG is through to a preliminary final after prevailing in a pulsating struggle with reigning premier Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night, escaping with a two-point win after Isaac Smith missed a shot on goal after the final siren.
The Cats took a two-point lead into the final term, with the lead changing four more times as both teams threw everything at each other. First
Cyril Rioli goaled to put the Hawks back in front at the four-minute mark. Cameron Guthrie hit back two minutes later with a major of his own, before Shaun Burgoyne split the middle on the run from 50m to put the reigning premiers five points up.
Five things we learned: Geel v Haw
The goal-fest dried up from there as both teams vied for the prize of a home preliminary final and it was not until the 22-minute mark that Josh Caddy got free deep inside the Cats' forward 50 to kick what turned out to the sealer of the Cats' epic 12.13 (85) to 12.11 (83) victory.

Match report: Growling Dogs end Eagles' year in stunning fashion

Match report: Growling Dogs end Eagles' year in stunning fashion

Alex Malcolm September 8, 2016 10:40 PM

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have produced one of the greatest finals wins in the club's history, stunning West Coast by 47 points at Domain Stadium to march into a semi-final.
The Bulldogs had never previously won a final interstate but an extraordinary execution of pressure, team defence and counter-attack saw them end the Eagles' season, winning 14.15 (99) to 7.10 (52).
"We haven't really broken a game open for a long time," Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said.
"It was an outstanding all-round performances from our 22."
"We didn't in our wildest dreams think we were going to play that well."
Five things we learned: West Coast v Western Bulldogs
The Eagles will face plenty of questions from this result. They were the first team in league history to register 16 wins and miss the top-four, but they saved their worst performance of the season for a cut-throat final. It was their largest loss in a home final and their second-lowest score of the season.

Match report: Dockers do it for Pav in champion's farewell

Match report: Dockers do it for Pav in champion's farewell

Alex Malcolm August 28, 2016 7:27 PM

FREMANTLE has sent Matthew Pavlich out in superb style with a gritty 20-point upset over the Western Bulldogs at Domain Stadium.
The Dockers out-willed the Bulldogs to send their greatest ever player out with a victory in his 353rd and final AFL game, winning 10.9 (69) to 6.13 (49).
Full match coverage and stats
The loss does not have any implications for the Bulldogs. They were consigned to a seventh-place finish and an elimination final against West Coast after Hawthorn's win over Collingwood was confirmed at half-time.
But the Bulldogs will be concerned by their horrific ball use, kicking at 46 per cent for the match. The Dockers' pressure was outstanding all day but it will go up a notch in September.
