Match Review Panel full statement: finals week two

September 21, 2015 1:44 PM

The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the matches played in week two of the 2015 Toyota AFL Finals. The following charges were laid:

Charges Laid:
Adam Goodes, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a first offence of misconduct against Scott Thompson, North Melbourne, during the third quarter of the First Semi Final between the Sydney Swans and North Melbourne, played at ANZ Stadium on Saturday September 19, 2015.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club, it was the view of the panel the incident should be classified as first offence for misconduct. A misconduct offence draws a fixed financial sanction of $1500. The player has no applicable bad record. An early plea can reduce the penalty to a $1000
sanction.

Other Matters Assessed:
Contact between the Adelaide Crows’ Scott Thompson and Hawthorn’s Luke Hodge from the first quarter of Friday’s Second Semi Final was assessed. Hodge has the ball and is tackled by Thompson. Thompson has hold of Hodge’s left arm when a bounce is called for by the umpire. It was the view of the panel the incident did not require any further
action.

Contact between Hawthorn’s Luke Hodge and the Adelaide Crows’ Brodie Smith from the second quarter of Friday’s Second Semi Final was assessed. Smith picks up the ball and is immediately pressured by Cyril Rioli, who attempts to tackle the Adelaide player. Smith loses his feet after contact with Rioli, as Hodge then attempts to tackle the Adelaide
player. High contact was made, with a free kick paid at the time to Smith. It was the view of the panel the high contact was caused by circumstances outside player Hodge’s control and the incident was dealt with at the time on the field with a free kick. No further action was taken.
